Terence Blanchard to Premiere Opera in St. Louis June 15
Trumpeter will also perform two concerts with his quintet in city
Trumpeter Terence Blanchard will make a number of appearances in St. Louis next week. Blanchard will premiere his first opera composition, Champion, based on the life of boxer Emile Griffith, Blanchard and will perform two free park concerts with his quintet. The opera, a co-commission of Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and Jazz St. Louis has been in the works for several years.
Blanchard and his quintet will appear Wednesday, June 12, at the Missouri Botanical Garden and Thursday, June 13, in St. Louis Place Park, as part of the Whitaker Music Festival and Whitaker Urban Evening Series, respectively. Champion will then debut on Saturday, June 15, at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Members of Blanchard’s group will also perform with the St. Louis Symphony as the orchestra for Champion.
According to a press release, “Blanchard has been active in St. Louis since the commission began. He opened Jazz St. Louis’s 2012-13 Jazz at the Bistro series in September 2012, worked with musicians and singers as he developed the opera, hosted adult outreach programs at Washington University and Christ Church Cathedral, and in February 2013, Blanchard participated in several youth outreach programs developed in conjunction with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Jazz St. Louis, and Street Dreamz.”
