Doky Brothers
Doky Brothers
Blue Note Records

Pianist Niels Lan Doky and bassist Chris Minh Doky are Danish brothers wonderfully joined at the musical hip, and hip they are. Lacing a European respect for melody with American-style jazz, the Dokys' fraternal synergism is incredible. It's most evident on their unison intro riffs, but also well-presented as interior segments. The album features another brother duo, Michael and Randy Brecker, the pairs working together on "Fearless Dreamer," separately on two other selections. Of the five originals and five standards, Doky arranging refreshes Carol King's "Natural Woman," retools Gershwin's "Summertime" with an R&B bounce and adds Curtis Stigers' pop vocal to "My One and Only Love." The originals serve as a point to the future of this duo. Teammates on the album are Swedish guitarist Ulk Wakenius, Finnish drummer Klaus Suonsaari and Danish drummer Alex Riel, with drummer Terri Lyne Carrington guesting on seven tracks. - Patricia Myers
