‘Round Midnight’ to Be Screened in NYC via Blue Note Jazz Fest
Acclaimed 1986 film stars the late Dexter Gordon
The Blue Note Jazz Festival will present a screening of the late saxophonist Dexter Gordon’s Oscar-nominated performance in Round Midnight at IFC Center in New York City June 24th at 7:00 p.m. The screening marks the anniversary year of what would be Gordon’s 90th birthday.
The 1986 French-American musical drama by Bertrand Tavernier stars Gordon as a resident tenor saxophone player at the Parisian jazz club, “The Blue Note,” in the 1950s. Gordon, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the film, also won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance for the film's soundtrack, The Other Side of Round Midnight.
Following the screening, the Blue Note Jazz Festival will host an in-depth panel discussion, moderated by American music/jazz historian, journalist and producer Ashley Kahn. The panel will also include Dexter Gordon’s wife, Maxine Gordon, former President/CEO of Blue Note Records, Bruce Lundvall, saxophonist Jimmy Heath and record producer, writer and founder of Mosaic Records Michael Cuscuna.
