This is an organic set of meditative performances by the unusual trio of bass, percussion, and flugelhorn. Friesen, via electronics, often sets up a drone or ostinato bass pattern over which he states a melody with Barone. Moreira adds percussion seasoning. Friesen and Barone are both lyrical players, and the echoes of this session occasionally suggests a distilled Bitches Brew. Minor keys dominate.
With originals such as "Early Morning Rises," "Jenelle," and "Song for My Sons," Friesen has carved out a special place for himself in the realm of spiritual jazz. The album, recorded in 1994, makes its point eloquently without shouting.
