On his debut, tenorist Sills plays the music of Lennie Tristano, Billy Strayhorn, Frank Rosolino, Miles Davis, Kenny Barron, Duke Ellington, and three of his own compositions. Sills playing, while low-key and without flash, is highly effective. "Ecstatic Static" pinpoints his flowing yet rooted style. Special guest altoist Gary Foster is heard on Tristano's "Ablution." Sills and Foster provide a swinging chase segment on "Voyage." The other capable musicians are Cecilia Coleman, piano, Tom Warrington, bass and Sherman Ferguson, drums.
