Roots of Jazz Funk, Volume 2
MVP

The latest installment in MVP's reissue package series, Roots of Jazz Funk Volume Two (MVP 50017-2, 70:43) is, l#ike its predecessor, a primer. And for the same reasons; serious jazzers don't need to be schooled on Wayne Shorter's "Footprints," Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" or John Coltrane's "Equinox." Still, considering how hard-bop and modal material is used and recontextualized nowadays, a knowledge of the original material is useful for those who haven't been wading in the mainstream waters too long. And, it's good to hear all of them under one disc heading, framed by flavorful tidbits like Brother Jack McDuff's hard swinging "Rock Candy" and Lou Donaldson's "Blues Walk."
