Mads Vinding
The Kingdom
Stunt

Danish bassist Vinding leads a lyrical European trio (Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi and Danish drummer Alex Riel) on this album. The music suggests the impressionistic ECM records of the '70s and also trio music recorded by Bill Evans and Chick Corea. Vinding's tone is deep and stately, and he and Pieranunzi swap melody statements seamlessly. Their version of Leonard Bernstein's "Somewhere" is particularly moving. "Lover," "I Remember Clifford," "Someday My Prince Will Come" and "My Foolish Heart" are other familiar tunes heard here.

The trio indulges in free-form play on the collectively improvised "Interlude No. 948." For all its impressionism, the group can also romp (as on "Lover"). Overall, this is a solid album in a style (or in several related styles) that seems to always remain current.
