Arkansas native and Sonny Boy Williamson disciple Frank Frost is a great, raunchy blues harp stylist, as he clearly demonstrates on Deep Blues (Evidence 26094-2; 43:40). He is not, however, a great singer, as he also demonstrates on this reissue (originally released in 1992 on the Appaloosa label). There's another problem here. The rhythm section here lacks the rolling, conversational hookup that makes for great blues albums. While guitarist-producer Fred James is an accomplished player, the drummer is a ham-fisted garage band reject while the bassist is struggling to play the root. In a word, lame. Frost is a fine talent...wasted, at least on this disc.
