Bryan Lee
Live at the Old Absinthe House Bar Saturday Night
Justin Time Records

Guitar mavens may want to check out Bryan Lee's Live At the Old Absinthe House Bar ...Saturday Night (Justin Time 111-2; 75:02). A companion piece to last year's ...Friday Night , this one features more flailing and wailing from fellow ax slingers Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Mahogany Rush guitar hero Frank Marino. Recorded live at Lee's longtime gig at the now-defunct establishment in the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans, it captures the energy and electricity of a packed house on Bourbon Street. Lee and his Jump Street Five charge up the crowd with smokin' renditions of Jimmy McCraklin's "Think," the Albert King anthem "I'll Play the Blues for You" and Howlin' Wolf's "How Many More Years."

The Shreveport's own blues prodigy Shepherd goes toe-to-toe with Lee on a Metersesque funk arrangement of "Look on Yonder Wall" and on Lee's chugging shuffle, "Dope Smoking Blues." Montreal's Marino adds speed licks to the mix on Guitar Slim's "The Things That I Used to Do" and Lowell Fulson's slow blues "Love Her With a Feeling." All three guitar hotshots exchange hot licks on Willie Dixon's "I'm Ready" and the Big Joe Turner classic "Flip, Flop & Fly."
