Video Premiere: Dave Douglas Quintet

Trumpeter's great working band performs new composition

Trumpeter Dave Douglas, with a new working band and guest vocalist Aoife O'Donovan, released one of 2012’s best jazz albums with Be Still, a sterling collection that included re-imaginings of classic American hymns in dedication to Douglas’ late mother. Despite the well-wrought concept, at the core of the album’s strengths was the trumpeter’s elastic, empathic quintet featuring saxophonist Jon Irabagon, pianist Matt Mitchell, bassist Linda Oh and drummer Rudy Royston.

That group has returned with Time Travel, its album due out April 9 on Douglas’ Greenleaf Music label. As Geoffrey Himes explains in his upcoming May issue lead review, the disc winningly highlights Douglas’ often overlooked abilities in and affinity for jazz’s more mainstream branches.

JazzTimes is pleased to premiere the first video from this quintet document, for Douglas’ composition “Garden State." This footage was captured during the album sessions at Avatar Studios in New York City in April of last year. Douglas has more news in the offing, including new dates in his 50-state tour and a forthcoming podcast series. For more on those endeavors, check back at JazzTimes.com.
