Tim Green
Songs From This Season
True Melody

Tim Green is a devout man, planful composer and adept alto saxophonist with noteworthy musical friends. These attributes comprise the raw materials for Songs From This Season, a debut of varied flavors yet consistent quality. Biblical scripture inspires three of the first five cuts, but Green’s thoroughgoing expression of his more earthly delights is preferable. “ChiTown,” dedicated to his wife, Anoa, tiptoes away from treacle via the textural beauty of Warren Wolf ’s vibes and Orrin Evans’ Fender Rhodes, whereas “Time for Liberation,” dedicated to film director Spike Lee, moves from a Coltrane-like intro through Romain Collin’s piano interlude and Green’s alto testimony before resolving with Gilad Hekselman’s tough, low-toned guitar riff.

The best of the two covers is, not surprisingly, “Pinocchio,” as Green, who has played in Wayne Shorter tribute bands, strips down to a trio, ditches modesty and demonstrates why he placed second (to Jon Irabagon) in the 2008 Thelonious Monk International Sax Competition.
