Paul Motian Tribute Set for NYC March 22

All-star lineup will honor the late drummer at Symphony Space

A tribute concert to the drummer Paul Motian, who died Nov. 22, 2011, will take place March 22 at Symphony Space in New York. Curated by Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano, the lineup as of now features Joey Baron, Tim Berne, Jakob Bro, Steve Cardenas, Chris Cheek, Ravi Coltrane, Marilyn Crispell, Andrew Cyrille, Billy Drewes, Bill Frisell, Larry Grenadier, Petra Haden, Jerome Harris; Billy Hart Quartet with Ethan Iverson, Ben Street, Mark Turner; Masabumi Kikuchi, Joe Lovano, Tony Malaby, Bill McHenry, Ben Monder, Greg Osby, Gary Peacock, Ed Schuller, Matt Wilson and more. Showtime is 7 p.m.

The concert is co-produced by Hans Wendl and Symphony Space, and takes place in Symphony Space’s Peter Jay Sharp Theatre.

Members of Motian’s ensembles, such as the early 1980s quintet, his longstanding trio with Frisell and Lovano, the Electric Bebop Band, Tethered Moon and Trio 2000 will reunite to play his music. They will perform in solos, duos, trios, quartets, quintets and larger configurations. Tickets are $45; members, $38; under 30, $15, available through Symphony Space.
