University of the Pacific Plans Brubeck Events
Community gathering and exhibit will celebrate the late musician’s life
The University of the Pacific, the college attended by Dave Brubeck and which now houses his archives, has two scheduled two events on its Stockton campus to honor the pianist and composer, who died Dec. 6.
First, a community gathering will be held at 6 p.m. this Thursday, Dec. 13, in Faye Spanos Concert Hall. There will be several speakers sharing thoughts and memories of Brubeck and a short performance of some of Brubeck’s works will be presented by the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet. In addition, there will be a signing table with blank books in the front of Faye Spanos, where members of the public can write short notes or memories of Brubeck. After the event, a celebration of Brubeck’s music will take place at the Take 5 Jazz at the Brew club, inside the Valley Brew Pub and Restaurant on the Miracle Mile. That event will start approximately 7:30 p.m.
Next, an exhibit called “The Times of Dave Brubeck” will be presented in the lobby of the William Knox-Holt University Library through Dec. 21. The exhibit focuses on Brubeck’s contributions to jazz and classical music and his efforts to promote civil rights and international diplomacy. The University Library will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday this week and the week of Dec. 17. Because the semester has ended, the library will be closed weekends for the rest of the month.
