Zootfest 2012 Coming to Pennsylvania Oct. 21

Benefit concert to feature Phil Woods, Dave Liebman, others

Zootfest 2012 is set to take place noon to 6 p.m. on Oct. 21 in the Keystone Room at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania. The program, which will headline Phil Woods, Dave Liebman, Bob Dorough, Bill Crow, Harry Allen and others, is a benefit for the ESU Jazz Synergy Series, the Al Cohn Memorial Jazz Collection and COTA CampJazz. The festival honors the legacies of saxophonists Cohn and Zoot Sims.

The program will include:

Jazz Ambassadors Play the Cold War
A multi-media presentation by Penny M. Von Eschen, author of Satchmo Blows Up the World, about the fascinating time period when the U.S. State Department unleashed an unexpected tool in its battle against Communism: jazz!

Swinging for the State Department
An informal and freewheeling story-telling session with musicians who were dispatched by the State Department to win hearts and minds in the far corners of the globe. Moderated by Penny Von Eschen, the panel will include Phil Woods, Bill Crow, and Dave Liebman, among others, with audience participation strongly encouraged.

An All-Star Jazz Jam á la Zoot
A loose and lively jam session, hosted by Adam Niewood, to conjure the spirit of Zoot Sims, featuring Phil Woods, Dave Liebman, Bob Dorough, Bill Crow, Harry Allen, Marko Marcinko, Joe Cohn, Sherrie Maricle,Jesse Green, Kim Parker, Rick Chamberlain, Sue Terry, Nelson Hill, Nancy Reed, plus surprise guests.

Library Alive X: An Al Cohn Big Band Jam
The Grammy-nominated COTA Festival Orchestra, joined by special guests, will close the festivities in a swinging style by performing the charts of Al Cohn and other acclaimed composers and arrangers from the music inventory of ESU’s Al Cohn Memorial Jazz Collection.
