Arturo Sandoval to Pay Tribute to Dizzy at NYC Gig
Trumpeter will be joined by Gary Burton, Bob Mintzer, Joey DeFrancesco, others
Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval will support the recent release of his Dizzy Gillespie tribute album, Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You), with a pair of performances at New York City’s Highline Ballroom on June 11, at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $35. Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You) is co-produced by Gregg Field and features vibraphonist Gary Burton, Yellowjackets saxophonist Bob Mintzer, organist Joey DeFrancesco, clarinetist Eddie Daniels as well as actor Andy Garcia on percussion and vocalist Manolo Gimenez.
According to a press release, Sandoval credits Gillespie with being a “mentor and friend who rescued Arturo and his family from an oppressive existence and gave them a chance at an renewed life.” The project features Gillespie classics framed in big-band arrangements.
