Small Irish town hosts summer school and festival annually
Faculty at this year’s Sligo Jazz Project International Summer School and Festival is set to include drummers John Riley and Paul Clarvis, pianist John Taylor, bassists Rufus Reid, John Goldsby and Michael Janisch and Italian vocalist Diana Torto. The Sligo Jazz Project (SJP), based in the small Irish town of Sligo, is an organization run by volunteer musicians for musicians. Since 2006 SJP has run a summer school and jazz festival. The 2012 event, scheduled for July 24-29, features 16 musicians and educators in six days of activity, with master classes, workshops, concerts and jam sessions. Composer and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler is the 2012 event's guest of honor and will perform at the festival.
SJP summer school fees (starting at under €300) include admission to the jazz and world music festival, which includes the entire summer school faculty plus Danish bassist Jasper Hoiby's Phronesis, Kenny Wheeler, Zakir Hussein’s Masters of Percussion, Femi Temowo and many others.
