Charli Persip Tribute Set for April 30 in NYC
Drummer’s long history as musician and educator will be celebrated
A tribute in honor of drummer Charli Persip will be held at 7:30 p.m. on April 30 at Saint Peter’s Church, Lexington Avenue and 54th Street in New York. Hosted by WBGO’s Rob Crocker, invited guests include musicians Ron Carter, Jimmy Cobb, Roy Haynes, Anthony Nelson and Kenny Washington; writers Amiri Baraka and Nat Hentoff; and Martin Mueller, Director of the New School jazz program. A $20 donation is suggested.
Persip, who is 82, has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy, Lee Morgan, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and many others. Since 1974, Persip has also been an instructor of drums and music for Jazzmobile Inc.—New York. He is currently a professor of jazz at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in Manhattan, having worked there for almost two decades, and has lectured at Howard University, University of Massachusetts, Ohio State University and North Texas State University.
