William Carn
Run Stop Run
Mythology Records

Sharing the frontline with Metheny-inspired guitarist Don Scott, and supported by a flexible rhythm tandem of bassist Jon Maharaj and drummer Ethan Ardelli, Canadian trombonist-composer William Carn employs a fresh and intelligent approach to contemporary jazz that mirrors David Binney’s. Not incidentally, the alto saxophonist produced this music and is presenting it on his label. Binney’s atmospheric touches add intrigue to Carn originals like “The Fallen,” “The Gift” and “Murphy!” as well as three brief sonic interludes. Elsewhere, Carn acquits himself with exceptional taste on his elegant, harmonically rich “Glassman,” Scott’s melancholy and moving “LBJ” and Maharaj’s beautiful ballad “His Eyes Are Sad and Knowing.” Stateside listeners should be more aware of what’s happening north of the border. And Run Stop Run is happening.
