Roscoe Mitchell Compositions to Premiere at Mills College
Contemporary classical performance will include new works
Composer and saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell, widely acclaimed for his improvisational style and his role in the field of avant-garde jazz, will reveal his contemporary classical side in a performance on March 31 at the Mills College Music Department in Oakland, Calif.
The performance will also serve as the world premiere of a composition by Mitchell, based on the poem “Would You Wear My Eyes” by the African-American beat poet and surrealist Bob Kaufman. Other acts will include pieces for chamber orchestra with the baritone Thomas Buckner, percussion virtuoso and Mills professor William Winant, the James Fei Alto Saxophone Quartet, the Eclipse String Quartet, and the conductor of the orchestra of the S.E.M. Ensemble in New York, Petr Kotik.
