Ralph Peterson: Getting the Gig with Michael Brecker

Video excerpt of master drummer explaining "what it takes to get the gig"

In this excerpt from master drummer Ralph Peterson's' Jazz Drumming Demystified instructional video, available from
, Ralph shares how he got the gig with sax icon Michael Brecker.

However, this serves merely as an example for how aspiring musicians could attempt to land the "dream gig" of their own.

He explains how he put himself in the position to be heard, as well as the need to remove the possibility of X hiring anybody else but YOU - because it makes his/her life easier!
That's how Ralph "attacked" the gig with Michael Brecker.
He further shares how he then "went to work" and seriously studied Brecker's last records and knew them verbatim.

In the rest of the Jazz Drumming Demystified video, master drummer and master teacher Ralph Peterson gives a jam-packed 2-hour 20-minute lesson (plus a 50-minute interview), running the gamut from sharing the Mechanics - developing the “What” and “How - to Total Musicality – the Art of “When”, “Where” and “Why.”

The video was recorded on 3/8/2010 at JazzHeaven Studios, NYC. To check out more instructional jazz videos, go to the JazzHeaven website.
