Pamela Rose’s ‘Wild Women of Song’ Show Coming to San Francisco
Companion book coincides with her SFJAZZ-presented concert
Following her recent appearance at the Monterey Jazz Festival, vocalist Pamela Rose’s multimedia show Wild Women of Song: Great Gal Composers of the Jazz Era—which celebrates the lives, times and music of the unheralded women songwriters who helped create the American Songbook—will be presented by SFJAZZ at San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre on November 12, at 8:00 pm.
Rose will be performing with Kristen Strom, tenor saxophone; Tammy Hall, piano; Jeff Massanari, guitar; John Shifflett, bass; and Allison Miller on drums. Special guest vocalist Denise Perrier will be featured as well.
According to a press release, “The program brings a joyous, female-centric perspective to jazz history as it honors women songwriters from diverse backgrounds and cultures—aincluding Jewish, African American, and Latino—who reflect the very fabric of American music. Wild Women of Song has archived over 500 images and performed in a few select venues in California, New York and London.” Rose has also created a companion web site to reflect her research about the songwriters and, more recently, a blog.
Rose has also compiled a book, published today by her Three Handed Media. The women songwriters covered in Wild Women of Song: Great Gal Composers of the Jazz Era are Ida Cox, Kay Swift, Dorothy Fields, Doris Fisher, Tot Seymour and Vee Lawnhurst, Peggy Lee, Bernice Petkere, Albert Hunter, Maria Grever, and Lil Hardin Armstrong.
The 80-page color, paperbound book, with a foreword by SFJAZZ Director of Education Rebeca Mauleón, also contains a 44-minute CD with tracks from Rose’s originalWild Women of Song album plus additional tracks, including a previously unreleased Peggy Lee song, “It’s a Good Day,” which Rose recorded at Skywalker with a vocal arrangement by Linda Tillery. Also included is Lil Hardin Armstrong’s “Just for a Thrill,” the title track of a previously released Rose CD.
