Wycliffe Gordon Named LALPC Artist-In-Residence

Chicago Jazz Ensemble Announces trombonist as mentor for local students

The Chicago Jazz Ensemble (CJE), with Artistic Director Dana Hall, has announced the inaugural Guest-Artist-In-Residence for its 2012 Louis Armstrong Legacy Program and Celebration (LALPC): trombonist, composer and arranger Wycliffe Gordon. Gordon was recently named the Jazz Journalists Association’s 2011 Trombonist of the Year and is also a music educator.

LALPC, the CJE’s signature education program now in its fifth year, sends musicians from the ensemble into nearly a dozen local schools each spring semester as mentors to share the artistic legacy of Louis Armstrong and jazz in general. During two one-week residencies, Gordon will work directly with students and educators in the Chicago public schools leading up to the program’s culmination on May 23-24, 2012, when the students give a public celebration performance at the Chicago Cultural Center, demonstrating the progress they have made.

There is no fee for participation in LALPC and the program accepts student ensembles with diverse configurations and capabilities. For more information about participation or the program itself, interested parties may contact Darius Hampton at dhampton@colum.edu or call 312-369-6199.
