Mark Rapp's Melting Pot
Good Eats

Last year, trumpeter Mark Rapp collaborated with saxophonist Don Braden on The Strayhorn Project. This year they’re back with what could be called The Lou Donaldson Project. Accompanied by drummer Klemens Marktl, guitarist Ahmad Mansour and Hammond B3 organist Joe Kaplowitz, Rapp puts a personal spin on funky anthems like “Alligator Bogaloo,” “Pot Belly” and the oddball “Spaceman Twist.” The title track is a Rapp original with a New Orleans second-line feel, and the group turns in a faithful version of Quincy Jones’ theme from Sanford and Son. Rapp also pulls out his trusty didgeridoo on a haunting rendition of Donaldson’s “Brother Soul.”
