Alexis Cuadrado
Noneto Iberico
BJU

This ambitious nine-movement suite showcases the compositional prowess of Barcelona-born bassist Alexis Cuadrado, a New York resident and founding member of the Brooklyn Jazz Underground. Cuadrado’s blend of flamenco and jazz travels from the dramatic fandango opener, “Very Well,” to the spirited alegría “Tocar y Parar,” the minimalist bulería “Por la Minima” and the raucous soleá “Solo el Sol Sale Siempre Solo,” which has alto saxophonist Loren Stillman soloing simultaneously alongside Brad Shepik’s dissonant distortion-laced guitar lines. This major work features such BJU members as trombonist Alan Ferber, drummer Mark Ferber, trumpeter Avishai Cohen and pianist Dan Tepfer, and includes Spanish musicians Perico Sambeat on sax and cajón player Marc Miralta. Engrossing from start to finish.
