Weekend Gig Picks: Winter Jazzfest, Bill Charlap Trio
Here are some gigs definitely worth checking out this weekend if you’re in the NY/NJ area. (Attendees of the conference for the Association of Performing Arts Presenters, or those going to the Jazz Journalists Association sessions, that means you.)
Of course, Winter Jazzfest begins tonight in Manhattan’s West Village, and promises its edgy, eclectic blend of jazz and jazzish sounds. Tickets are priced to sell: $25/one night, $35/both Friday and Saturday nights. APAP members can get free passes by RSVPing to firstname.lastname@example.org. For passes and schedules, visit winterjazzfest.com.
Also of note is this Sunday’s performance by the Bill Charlap Trio at the National Alliance on Mental Illness-Mercer’s annual benefit gala. The world-class piano trio, featuring Charlap with drummer Kenny Washington and bassist Sean Smith, will perform music by American composers—Cole Porter and George Gershwin among them—who dealt with mental illness during their lives. The concert will begin at 3 p.m., with a dinner to follow at 5:30; the venue is the College of New Jersey’s Music Building (2000 Pennington Road in Ewing, N.J.). Ticket information is below:
Concert + dinner: $165
Concert + dinner for eight persons: $1,300
