Hiromi sideman Tony Grey is a facile improviser on electric six-string bass, with a penchant for melodicism and a knack for sophisticated chording. On “Awake and Dreaming” he is joined by Shakti members Selvaganesh and U. Srinivas for a bit of Indo-tinged fusion powered by drummer Deantoni Parks. The Brit bassist showcases his chops on the propulsive “Out of Something” and the lyrical title track, then introduces his expressive Jon Anderson-esque vocals on the ethereal “Why Do People Hurt Each Other?” and the Indian-flavored “Say What You Mean.” Harmonica ace Gregoire Maret guests on “Living Underground,” which finds the leader unleashing some nasty fuzz tones on bass.
