McCoy Tyner to Release New Solo Disc
Since its inception in 2007, Half Note Records’ McCoy Tyner Music imprint has yielded some outstanding product: In '07 there was Quartet, a live recording with Joe Lovano, Christian McBride and Tain Watts that took the guise of Coltrane’s band but became something worth considering on its own terms. Then came Guitars, last year’s curious CD/DVD set that pitted Tyner’s rumbling fourth chords against a lineup to make Guitar Player subscribers drool.
On Aug. 25, Tyner fans—or anyone with a remote interest in American jazz—can pick up Solo: Live in San Francisco. While Quartet was also recorded in the Bay Area, at Yoshi’s Oakland, this set was captured at the Herbst Theatre during the SFJAZZ spring season in ’07. The set list, which includes Tyner staples and standards, is below. Live From San Francisco is Tyner's first solo recording in nearly 10 years.
1. African Village
2. I Should Care
3. Lazy Bird
4. Naima
5. Just Feelin’
6. You Taught My Heart to Sing
7. Blues for Jeff
8. Ballad for Aisha
9. Sweet and Lovely
10. Angelina
11. In a Mellow Tone
Tynerphiles should also try and catch the man with his trio (plus Gary Bartz) at NYC's Highline Ballroom on Aug. 23 before he takes off on a tour of Japan. For more info on that gig, click here. For more on McCoy, visit mccoytyner.com.
