Free NYC and L.A. Concerts Celebrate Monk’s 100th Birthday
Thelonious Monk’s 100th birthday will be celebrated with a free five-hour marathon of his music and music influenced by the late piano legend on Friday, Oct. 10, at 5 p.m. when the World Financial Center Winter Garden, 220 Vesey Street, Manhattan, becomes the host for Monk at 91—Fazioli Piano Marathon.
Scheduled for Monk at 91 are jazz pianists and other musicians including Geri Allen, Randy Weston, Frank Kimbrough, Chuchito Valdes, Jean Michel Pilc, Edsel Gomez, Elio Villafranca, Eli Yamin, Francesca Tanksley, Armen Donelian, Harold O’Neal, Helen Sung, Junior Mance, Magli Souriau, Mulgrew Miller, Peter Malinverni, Ted Rosenthal and Aaron Diehl. WNYC’s evening music host Terence McKnight will m.c. All the pianists will be playing a Fazioli F-278 concert grand, courtesy of Klavierhaus.
Monk’s 100th birthday will also be celebrated in Los Angeles when an entirely different cadre of pianists perform Monk at 91—Fazioli Piano Marathon during a three-hour concert Friday, Oct. 17, outdoors at 7+Fig, Ernst & Young Plaza, 735 Figueroa Street.
