‘Jazz Icons 3’ DVD Series to Include Rollins, Simone, Hampton, Kirk, More
Performances by Sonny Rollins, Oscar Peterson and Cannonball Adderley highlight the third series of Jazz Icons DVDs, which features seven new releases, due Sept. 30.
Lionel Hampton (pictured), Nina Simone, Bill Evans and Rahsaan Roland Kirk are the other artists featured in these never-before-released concerts, which were filmed in European concert halls and television studios between 1958 and 1975. In some cases, these performances have never been broadcast before.
All seven 60- to 100-minute DVDs are available separately, or as a boxed set with a bonus eight disc.
Rollins’ disc features two concerts from 1965 and 1968, with pianist Kenny Drew and bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen among his accompanists.
Jazz Icons highlights Adderley’s 1963 set, with performances from Switzerland and Germany. The shows, which feature Nat Adderley, Yusef Lateef and Joe Zawinul on a horn line, were recorded two days apart.
A cover of Bob Dylan’s “The Ballad of Hollis Brown” is featured on Simone’s disc, which covers two shows; one from 1965, another from 1968.
On Peterson’s disc you get your pick of three shows from 1963, 1964 and 1965. Bassist Ray Brown, drummer Ed Thigpen and trumpeters Clark Terry and Roy Eldridge accompany Peterson.
Hampton’s DVD is the oldest, with a one-hour big band performance from Belgium in 1958.
For the most varied performances, look to Evans’ disc, which culls from five different performances between 1965 and 1975. Four different rhythm sections back Evans during the performances.
Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s three performances (two from 1963, one from 1967) feature Kirk performing with his entire arsenal of instruments at his disposal. Drummers Daniel Humair and Alex Riel are among his sidemen.
Finally, the bonus disc features more performances from Rollins, Kirk and Simone, as well as a few interviews.
