Jazz at Lincoln Center Announces 2008-09 Programming

Jazz at Lincoln Center has announced its 2008-09 season, featuring over 3,000 events including concerts, education events, broadcasts and worldwide touring. The 2008-09 season marks the organization’s 22nd season of programming and the fifth season in its home, Frederick P. Rose Hall. Among the highlights:

* Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis concerts feature performances with Ahmad Jamal; Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra; Blue Note Records at 70 Years with Joe Lovano and Dianne Reeves (pictured), collaboration with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and newly commissioned works by Wynton Marsalis and Vincent Gardner

*Thelonious Monk Festival features the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Marcus Roberts, Danilo Pérez in concerts and special events

* Paquito D’Rivera guest leads the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra

* In honor of the 50th anniversary of John Coltrane’s Giant Steps and Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, performances by the Mulgrew Miller Trio, Take 6, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra saxophone section and a special appearance by drummer Jimmy Cobb

* SFJAZZ Collective, comprised of Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, Stefon Harris, Miguel Zenon, Robin Eubanks, Renee Rosnes, Matt Penman and Eric Harland, performs music of Horace Silver and originals

* NEW SERIES: Duos features Richard Bona and Lionel Loueke, Roy Hargrove and Cedar Walton, McCoy Tyner and Ravi Coltrane

* Benny Goodman Centennial includes concert in Rose Theater, Swing Dance Party in The Allen Room and Jazz For Young People concert

* Featured guest artists include: Cyro Baptista, Kenny Barron, Ron Blake, Richard Bona, Kim Burrell, Bill Charlap, John Clayton, Vinnie Colaiuta, Freddy Cole, Ravi Coltrane, Chick Corea, Paquito D’Rivera, Joey DeFrancesco, Kenny Garrett, Wycliffe Gordon, Jeff Hamilton, Roy Hargrove, Lionel Loueke, Joe Lovano, Christian McBride, John McLaughlin, Mulgrew Miller, David “Fathead” Newman, Eddie Palmieri, Ken Peplowski, Houston Person, Dianne Reeves, Luciana Souza, Take 6, McCoy Tyner, Cedar Walton, Bob Wilber and more

* Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola features guest artists, free Jazz Battles on first Saturday of every month (except January), Diet Coke Women In Jazz Festival, Sing Into Spring Festival and more

* Nesuhi Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame 2008 inductees: Ornette Coleman, Gil Evans, Bessie Smith, Mary Lou Williams

* 20 Education programs and resources continue and expand for students, educators, and listeners of all ages

* WeBop! classes for 8 month-5 year olds and a caregiver continue at Frederick P. Rose Hall and Head Start in Washington Heights in collaboration with Lori Custodero, Teachers College, Columbia University

* Jazz for Young People concerts feature topics on Thelonious Monk, Benny Goodman and “What Is Hot Jazz?”

* Middle School Jazz Academy continues to serve 15 talented New York City middle school musicians and features expanded alumni connections summer camp, concert attendance and gigs throughout the year

* Benny Carter, the first of non-Ellington arrangers to be included in Essentially Ellington program

* Musicians share their passion for jazz in classroom setting through expanded Swing University offerings: Lewis Nash/Drums, Dick Katz/Piano Icons, Randy Sandke/Bix Beiderbecke, Don Byron/Lester Young, along with Jazz at Lincoln Center Curator Phil Schaap and others

* Discussions on Women, Race, and Cultural Diplomacy along with a one-on-one conversation with master drummer Roy Haynes in Jazz Talk Series.

* Annual Band Director Academy sessions with top faculty in St. Louis, Calgary, Canada and New York at Jazz at Lincoln Center

* Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Higher Ground Hurricane Relief Fund awarded $622,000 grants to the Jazz Foundation of America, Make It Right Foundation and Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Jazz Camp

* New Jazz at Lincoln Center and XM shows: “Live from Jazz at Lincoln Center” and “Live from Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola,” hosted by Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola Artistic Manager Todd Barkan and new season of nationally syndicated “Jazz at Lincoln Center Radio” by WFMT Networks

* Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra tours throughout United States and Canada in summer and fall 2008

* The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad, produced by Jazz at Lincoln Center and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs is designed to foster cultural exchange with audiences worldwide and tours through June 2008, including free concerts in Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C.
