2007 BBC Jazz Awards Announced
The results are in for the 2007 BBC Jazz Awards. The awards ceremony took place last Thursday, July 12, at the Mermaid Theatre in London.
The award for Best Band went to Finn Peters’ Finntet, a London group that incorporates dance music and Latin beats into its wide-ranging sound. Best Instrumentalist was awarded to Julian Siegel, who has played with Andrew Hill, Steve Lacy and Hermeto Pascoal. Ian Shaw walked away with the Best Vocalist award and bop tenorist Simon Spillett received the Rising Star Award.
BBC Radio 2 Jazz Artist of the Year was awarded to singer Curtis Stigers, and the Jazz on 3 Innovation Award went to Tom Bancroft. Album of the Year was handed to the Neil Cowley Trio for their album Displaced.
Madeleine Peyroux (pictured), who got her start busking on the streets of Paris, received the International Award. The award for Services to Jazz was given to Gary Crosby. Jazz-piano icon Dave Brubeck received the Lifetime Achievement award.
