Kennedy Center Announces 2006-2007 Season
The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., will kick off its 2006-07 Jazz Concert Series in September with the 19th annual Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, featuring a piano competition this year in honor of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz’s 20th anniversary.
The competition is part of a concert series that also features National Public Radio’s “Jazz Piano Christmas” (on Dec. 8) and “A Jazz New Year’s Eve” (on Dec. 31).
The 12th Annual Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival will take place May 10-12, 2007, while other featured events include the Louis Armstrong Legacy Singers Series, the Art Tatum Piano Panorama and the Cadillac Platinum Series.
The final festival, Jazz in our Time, will kick off with an all-star performance March 3, 2007. For the following seven days, dozens of performers will participate in a variety of concerts including three performances highlighting living jazz legends and eight Millennium Stage Shows focusing on the evolution of jazz from the 1920s to present. A photography exhibition highlighting the Kennedy Center’s Jazz history will be displayed in the Hall of States.
