New Label to Release Albums By Mandolinist, Django Festival
April 1 will see the launch of Switzerland’s Kind of Blue Records with the release of two inaugural albums, Gypsy Swing – The Django Festival Live at Birdland and Hamilton de Holanda’s (pictured) Samba do Aviao. Founded by Roy Tarrant, the label has a stated philosophy to bring the “finest available jazz musicians” to the best studios in the world.
The label has an additional 12 albums lined up for release in 2006 with musicians including Kenny Barron, David Benoit, Randy Brecker, Ron Carter, Bill Charlap, Joe Lovano and Phil Woods.
Gypsy Swing was recorded live at the 2002 Django Reinhardt Festival and features Dorado Schmitt, James Carter and Angelo Debarre, among others, on lead guitar. A bonus track featuring Babik Reinhardt at the 2000 festival is also included.
Samba do Aviao features the jazz mandolin of Hamilton de Holanda, who also played on Cesaria Evora’s 2003 Grammy-winning album, Voz d’Amor. Accordion player Richard Galliano accompanies Holanda on Samba do Aviao.
