Impulse! Celebrates Coltrane's 75th
Impulse! celebrates John Coltrane’s 75th birthday anniversary with the release of a CD series documenting Coltrane’s musical development.
Titles include The Very Best of John Coltrane (available now), featuring “Lush Life,” “Crescent” and “My Favorite Things,” Standards (due Aug. 21, 2001), with “Greensleeves,” “Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise” and “All or Nothing at All” and Spiritual (due Sept. 25, 2001), which features “Dear Lord,” “Song of Praise” and original liner notes by Alice Coltrane, John’s widow.
Impulse! will also release The Olatunji Concert (The Last Live Recording) on Sept. 25. The concert recording features Coltrane’s quintet with Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, Jimmy Garrison and Rashied Ali just three months before John's death in July 1967. Coltrane’s final version of “My Favorite Things” is documented on the disc and portions of an interview Coltrane gave to Bernard Drayton, who recorded the concert at Coltrane’s request, are also included.
Topping off the tribute is a four-CD Coltrane retrospective available Oct. 23.
