Bill Gerhardt & Cotangent
Thrive
SteepleChase

An adept composer and astute follower of the jazz tradition, pianist Bill Gerhardt’s intelligent writing alternately reflects the influence of Chick Corea (the intricate “Roundabout” and “Spain”-like “Esdrainia”), Thelonious Monk (the loose, angular “Sliver Liver”) and Wayne Shorter (the ethereal “Repair”). Marc Mommaas contributes mightily on tenor (the boppish title track) and soprano sax (the delicate, breezy “No Fault At All”). Guest Ron Horton blows some lovely flugelhorn on the introspective “Repeat Beginnings” and unleashes high-note trumpet fusillades on “Repair.”
