Trippin 'n' Rhythm
From the opening seconds of “Sweet Sundays,” the first song on Tim Bowman’s new, self-titled CD, you just savvy that Bowman is again reaching out to fans who helped him break through with stingy smooth-jazz radio in 2004 with his No. 1 song “Summer Groove.” And Bowman, the veteran Motor City guitarist who once toured with the Winans, cheerfully dishes out plenty of his Wes Montgomery-inspired pop-jazz tunes.
He’s brought some heavy hitters along for the ride, including keysman Jeff Lorber on the bluesy “Mr. B”; saxophonist Najee for the ultra-romantic “Rapture,” on which Bowman plays the nylon string; and Kirk Whalum for some more sax time on the funky “On the Flyyy.” Bowman, too, throws in a vocal R&B tune, “All I Need Is You,” which serves as a display for the talents of his son, gospel singer Tim Bowman Jr. Uptempo funky grooves or mellow stuff, it doesn’t matter. Bowman unquestionably brings the goodies for his smooth fans.
