Wolfgang Haffner
ACT Nu Jazz

The latest offering from prolific German drummer Haffner is a largely electronic affair, a moody chillout album with minimalist horns, guitars and other instruments draped in layers of keyboard ambience and rhythmic programming. While this sort of music may sound to many jazz fans (myself included) like the background to a BMW commercial, give Haffner credit: Shapes rarely feels stiff or unnatural. It is organic and real, retaining an essential humanism too often left out when electronica meets jazz.
