Ballads and Burners
Recorded in 2000, this collection of solo piano pieces explores two sides of Dave Frank’s musical personality. Frank is a highly impressionistic player: Using churning left-hand walking lines and explosive right-hand improvisations, his “burners” invoke the unstoppable onslaught of technology—freight trains, streams of digital information, the gears of great machines. Even more directly visual are five tracks inspired by painters. The dappled light of Renoir, Dali’s spidery shapes and the kinetic abandon of Jackson Pollock are all reflected in iridescent miniature.
