Fresh Sound New Talent
Only one of the dozen tracks on pianist Jesse Stacken’s first full-length release passes the five-minute mark. But these brief structures contain broad, unique vistas, giving Stacken’s excellent trio surprising room to stretch out. The compositions are loosely conceived, hazy tone poems and vignettes that Stacken brings into sharp focus through jabbing piano statements or blurs with softly curling solo lines. Drummer Jeff Davis adds finely etched detail while expanding or contracting the space, and bassist Eivind Opsvik colors the scenes in curious contrapuntal shades.
