John Coltrane
Interplay
Prestige

The five-CD box set Interplay (Prestige) contains John Coltrane’s Prestige recordings in which there was no leader or he was a co-leader with others. Dating from 1956-58 with all of the music previously released, this intriguing collection finds Trane interacting with such players as Hank Mobley, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Bobby Jaspar, Jackie McLean, Donald Byrd, Frank Wess, Paul Quinichette, Pepper Adams, Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Burrell and Mal Waldron. The jam session settings feature Coltrane holding his own and showing increasing individuality with notable musicians, none of whom he would collaborate with after 1960.
