Von Freeman
The Best Of Von Freeman On Premonition
Premonition

Von Freeman, a brilliant tenor saxophonist based in Chicago who has always had a sound of his own, recorded four CDs for Premonition. The Best of Von Freeman on Premonition has 18 selections on two CDs drawn from those sessions (two are previously unreleased) with Freeman stretching out mostly on standards, usually with a quartet. Most interesting is the opportunity to hear him taking unaccompanied tenor solos on “My Little Brown Book,” “If I Should Lose You” and “Violets for Your Furs.” In addition, this package includes a DVD that has an extensive interview from 2002 of Freeman (including some humorous stories about Sun Ra) and the dedication of “Von Freeman Way” in Chicago on his 80th birthday in 2005 (with a good-humored speech by the tenor) although it is a pity that no performance footage is included.
