Marguerite Mariama
Wild Women Never Get the Blues…Well, Not Anymore!
Powerlight Records

Say hello to Marguerite Mariama, the quintessential “take-charge” woman: executive producer of her debut album with a background that includes educator-cultural-historian-actress-dancer (studied with Katherine Dunham). If that fails to impress you, call her Dr. Mariama. She earned her doctorate in performance education and was a professor in the New York City University system for 10 years. So she knows what she’s talking and singing about. Listen to the title tune and “Goin’ to Chicago Blues” and you’ll realize she’s one of the most exciting blues belters on the scene. Then check “You Don’t Know What Love Is” and you’ll hear she’s equally comfortable with a moody ballad. You’ll also learn she boasts an enviable range with confident intonation that allows her to negotiate that serpentine 13-to-11 ending. “Young and Foolish” gives her a chance to display her straightahead jazz chops and her infectious sense of musical humor. It also gives tenorist Chico Freeman yet another chance to swing with his most “outside” comments.
