The 14-piece Mingus Big Band’s recent Live In Tokyo (Sunnyside 3042) revives eight difficult Mingus pieces and plays them with spirit, high musicianship and a real understanding for the music. This is the type of orchestra that Charles Mingus should have been able to lead during his lifetime.
