Trevor Dunn
Sister Phantom Owl Fish
Ipecac

Ten years ago I might've loved Trevor Dunn's Trio Convulsant's Sister Phantom Owl Fish (Ipecac). Today, however, its heavy-metal, jump-cut, rebel-without-a-cause aesthetic just leaves me cold. Bassist Dunn, guitarist Mary Halvorson and drummer Ches Smith are all very accomplished musicians, and I'm sure they feel very strongly about their work. But I can't abide it. The sheer ugliness of their excesses just irritates me. The jazz world and the real world are different places than they were a decade ago, when irony ruled and the Knitting Factory was the center of the universe. Could be I'm just getting old. But if I am, creative nihilism like this is getting there right alongside me.
