Charlie Parker
In Sweden 1950: The Complete Recordings
Storyville

Charlie Parker's second and last European tour took place in Sweden—with a brief excursion to Copenhagen—in November of 1950. Although much of the music went unrecorded, a jazz fan did capture some formal and informal performances on his wire recorder. Those previously released recordings are offered once again on Charlie Parker in Sweden 1950 (Storyville). The collection consists of four tracks from a concert in Malmo on November 22nd, four from a performance in Halsingborg on the 24th, and three from a jam session at a restaurant later that second evening. Among the altoist's Swedish colleagues were the fine bebop trumpeter Rolf Ericson, who later was featured with Stan Kenton and with the Lighthouse All-Stars, among many others. Due to the primitive recording circumstances, the sound quality leaves much to be desired, and there are some incomplete performances. But happily, Parker and Ericson come through loud and clear. Parker consistently dazzles, attacking the familiar repertoire with his usual masterful control and an especially adventurous dynamism. Ericson proves a worthy partner, offering fully mature, imaginative bop in a manner somewhat reminiscent of Red Rodney.
