Charlie Parker Celebration Set for Kansas City

17-day “Bird” tribute includes concerts, educational programs and more

A citywide, 17-day celebration of Charlie Parker is planned for Kansas City, Mo., Aug. 14-30. A joint effort by KC Jazz ALIVE, the American Jazz Museum, Jazz Ambassadors, UMKC Jazz Friends and the Elderstatesmen of Kansas City Jazz, the series of events will explore and celebrate the life and legacy of Kansas City native Parker.

Events include performances at 12 K.C. jazz clubs; a Charlie Parker historical tour and musical salute; several educational programs, including a Bird Lives music boot camp; a 21-sax graveside salute for Parker's birthday on Aug. 29; a special panel session on Parker; and a special presentation of a Paul Messner puppet show, "Rag Swing Bop: The Kansas City Jazz Story."

Parker was born in Kansas City, Kans., and eventually moved to Kansas City, Mo. The event is advertised as the largest Parker celebration in the country. For further information, visit KC Jazz ALIVE or American jazz Museum.
