Apollo Theater 2014-15 Season Includes Jazz Shows

Irvin Mayfield, Harlem Jazz Shrines fest and more coming to Harlem landmark

Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater has announced its 2014-2015 season, which includes a number of jazz-related programs. They include Irvin Mayfield, Jr. and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra (Nov. 8), Ellington at Christmas (Dec. 13-14) and the Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival (May 4-9, 2015).

This jam session will turn the Apollo’s soundstage into a full-fledged party featuring some of New Orleans’ finest artists and musicians, including Stefon Harris, Jon Batiste, and musicians from the New Orleans Jazz Institute.

Ellington at Christmas

Saturday, December 13, 2014, 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., Sunday, December 14

Featuring David Berger Jazz Orchestra, Norm Lewis, Priscilla Baskerville, Jason Samuels Smith, and Dance Theatre of Harlem

Under the musical direction of David Berger, this holiday presentation will include excerpts from Duke Ellington’s The Nutcracker Suite, featuring jazz interpretations of the original Tchaikovsky composition arranged by Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, and an excerpt from Ellington’s Sacred Music Concert. With narration by actor Norm Lewis, the two-part program will also feature singers and Priscilla Baskerville, tap dancer Jason Samuels Smith, a mass gospel choir of over 50 voices, and Dance Theatre of Harlem.

Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival

Monday, May 4 – Saturday, May 9, 2015

Presented in collaboration with Harlem Stage, Jazzmobile, and Columbia University

This Harlem-wide jazz festival will celebrate the rich legacy of jazz in Manhattan’s uptown community, bringing both established and emerging artists to famed Harlem venues. The centerpiece of this year’s Festival will be a concert presented in association with the Kennedy Center on May 9, Harlem Nights/U Street Lights The Apollo will also present a lineup of Apollo Music Café performances and educational programming throughout the week. Additional details will be announced in the coming months.

Presented in collaboration with the Kennedy Center

Curated by Jason Moran, this adventurous program explores the deep musical connections between the Harlem and D.C. jazz scenes. The concert features a stellar line-up of musicians from both communities, spotlighting key artists and seminal works that have inextricably bound these two scenes for nearly a century.

During its 2014-2015 season, the Apollo will also present an international tour for the first time in its history—its original production James Brown: Get on the Good Foot – A Celebration in Dance will tour in early 2015 and be presented in cities across Germany, Switzerland, and Luxembourg.
