Kate McGarry
Show Me
Lemur

A gifted New Yorker, Kate McGarry, has a voice that reflects all the best qualities of her hometown: bold, bright, gutsy and imbued with a salty dash of Marisa Tomei Brooklynese. On Show Me (Lemur Music; 45:20), McGarry goes to town on a mixed bag of standards and show tunes. Though her "Gypsy in My Soul" is quite as free-spirited as one might like, she transforms the Lerner and Loewe title tune-so often associated with Julie Andrews' thundering treatment-into a languorous invitation for overdue sex. She fills "This Is Always" with the cozy joy of genuine satisfaction, delivers "The Thrill Is Gone" with poignant deflation and enriches "Get Out of Town" with a predatory purr that's worthy of Julie London.
