David Liebman with Walter Quintus
Time Immemorial

In this sound landscape Liebman and engineer Walter Quintus have provided a thorough examination of many of the sounds saxophones are not really known for: fingering the pads of a baritone, tapping a fingernail on a mouthpiece cap and blowing into the horn without a neck are just a few, and many times these sounds are run through endless electronic permutations by the engineer in case we missed something the first time through. Though the disc allows some thoughtful passages of Liebman improvising on tenor and soprano in a traditional way, I found this work to be ponderous and sometimes a bit silly. Next time, how about a second volume of the Jobim stuff instead?
