Not the Same Old Blues Crap II: A Fat Possum Records Compilation

Burnside is also featured along with Mississippi Delta colleagues Junior Kimbrough, Asie Payton, Scott Dunbar, T-Model Ford, King Ernest, Super Chikan and Paul "Wine" Jones on Not the Same Old Blues Crap II: A Fat Possum Records Compilation (Fat Possum 80342-2; 48:29). A collection of the primal country and juke blues that typifies the unadulterated, uncompromising Fat Possum sound, these tracks convey a raw vitality and subversive spirit that defies the slick-lick aesthetic that dominates contemporary blues.

Perhaps the rawest and sickest of the bunch, Paul "Wine" Jones, is represented here by a twisted, punkish remix of "Goin' Back Home" and the more straightforward country-blues "I'm Gonna Leave." His 80-year-old counterpart, T-Model Ford, grinds ferociously with drummer Spam on "Sail On," a mesmerizing, distortion-laced meditation on the blues that could easily cross over to followers of Sonic Youth and fans of Neil Young's feedback assaults. Given those edgy takes on the age-old 12-bar formula, the title of this compilation is wholly appropriate.
